Dutch news media report that a fire in the Centraal underground car park in the centre of Arnhem was controlled by the sprinkler system. The fire broke out on the morning of Monday, 15 December. Thanks to the sprinkler system the fire brigade could access the fire to complete extinguishment. The car park, which has a capacity of 1,050 cars, was re-opened after an hour. Only the car that caught fire was damaged.
Sprinklers are not compulsory in underground car parks in The Netherlands. However, the country has experienced a number of large fires in which tens of cars have been destroyed, many more damaged and the car park structure weakened leading to lengthy closures. This has convinced many car park operators to fit sprinklers.
