On 27 July a truck caught fire after a collision in the Jagdberg Tunnel towards Jena. The Free State of Thuringia, which is the tunnel owner, said that thanks to the tunnel’s fire protection measures and the prompt action of the fire brigade, the fire was extinguished within 30 minutes and tunnel was able to reopen soon after.
The tunnel is fitted with a compressed air foam system which was activated manually from the tunnel operating centre in Zella Mehlis. Birgit Keller, the Minister for Infrastructure and Agriculture of the Free State of Thuringia, said, “Automatic suppression systems are not presently part of the usual tunnel equipment. Here the German Federal Government should be encouraged to invest more money.”
