Tragedy in unsprinklered French apartment building
French media report that 10 people died in a fire in Paris on 5th February. The fire was started intentionally and spread to several floors of the eight-storey building. Firefighters rescued over 50 people but 30 people were injured, including six firefighters. The building, in the affluent 16th arrondissement, was behind another building, hindering fire service access. There was no mention of any sprinkler system being present. While more details of the fire are yet to be made public, sprinklers have controlled or extinguished many deliberate fires, preventing deaths and injuries.
