Abu Dhabi Requires Sprinklers in Existing Schools
Gulf News reports that Abu Dhabi will require both new and existing schools to fit sprinklers. 19 people died in a fire in a shopping mall in Doha in May 2012, most of them children in a nursery at the mall. This new measure is part of the government’s response to prevent a repeat tragedy. Meanwhile in Europe only Scotland requires sprinklers in all new schools. In Wales government funding for new schools is conditional on the fitting of sprinklers. Even Scotland and Wales do not require sprinklers in existing schools.
