French media report that six people were injured, two seriously, in a fire at a hotel in the Alpine ski resort of Val d’Isère. The fire in the residence les Jardins du val, a self-catering hotel, occurred around 13:00 on Monday, 10th February. 200 people were evacuated as 50 fire-fighters battled the flames. According to reports, the fire started on the fifth storey of the nine-storey wooden chalet-style building. One woman jumped from the eighth floor and is seriously injured. Eight others suffered smoke inhalation, of whom one is in a serious condition. This is not the first major fire in ski accommodation in France. The wood in these buildings encourages external fire spread. Unfortunately, they are not sprinklered and so are vulnerable to fire.
