An official has confirmed that the new prisons in Beveren, Dendermonde, Leuze-en-Hainaut, Marche-en-Famenne and Haren are fitted with sprinklers. Rapid evacuation is not possible in a prison so the prisoners are particularly vulnerable to uncontrolled fires. There have been several disasters with major loss of life so fitting sprinklers in these new prisons is a wise decision. Following a fire that killed 11 prisoners in 2005 at a detention centre at Amsterdam airport, many prisons in The Netherlands have also been fitted with sprinklers.
