Spanish media report that a fire in the Adorea home for the elderly in Seville has killed one woman, severely injured five other people and hospitalised 21 people in total.
The fire was reported at 22:30 on 5 January and 160 firefighters and others attended, assisting with evacuation of the 97 residents. Fire investigators believe the fire started with a short-circuit in a small room on the third storey, spreading smoke to the fourth storey.
There are no requirements to fit sprinklers in care homes in Spain, unlike in Denmark, Finland, Norway, Scotland, Sweden and Wales, as well as Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the United States. Evidence from the United States shows that fire deaths are reduced by over 80% in care homes if they are protected with sprinklers. This is because sprinklers keep the fire small, so that less smoke is produced, and cool gases so that they spread less easily.
