Tagesschau reports that a fire in a new fire station in Stadtallendorf, about 110 km north of Frankfurt, destroyed the fire station and the fire engines in it. The fire station was not protected with sprinklers, nor did it have a fire detection system. As with many German fire stations, this one is manned by volunteers and so is often unmanned. One such volunteer said there have been more incidents like this. Fire engines contain a lot of batteries, for radio equipment, thermal imaging cameras, laptops, tablets and hydraulic rescue tools. These are charged in the fire station and fires are not uncommon. Despite that, few fire stations have fire detection and none are protected with sprinklers. The press article picked up on the lack of these obvious measures.
