Once again, a fire in a nightclub, started by pyrotechnics, has killed large numbers of young people. At the time of writing 29 had died from a fire in a nightclub on 30 October in Bucharest, Romania. This awful tragedy is very similar to previous fires:

Kiss Nightclub, Santa Maria, Brazil, 2013 – 242 deaths
Lame Horse Nightclub, Perm, Russia, 2009 – over 150 deaths
Republica Cromagnon Nightclub, Buenos Aires, Argentina, 2004 – 194 deaths
Station Nightclub, Rhode Island, USA, 2003 – 100 deaths

The Station Nightclub fire led the US government to reconstruct the disaster to see how the fire could develop so quickly and to determine whether sprinklers could have prevented the deaths. The National Institute of Standards and Technology, NIST, produced a full report. NIST made a number of recommendations, one being that sprinklers should be fitted in nightclubs.
The benefits of sprinklers are well-illustrated by these videos of the reconstructed fire with and without sprinklers.
