Two women died on 18th February when fire broke out at the Vintertullen home for the elderly in Södermalm, Stockholm. Four more are in hospital suffering from smoke inhalation, while 12 more have to be rehoused due to the damage. The fire was reported at 00:39 and was extinguished within an hour. Nevertheless three floors of the unsprinklered building were damaged. Sweden requires sprinklers in new care homes but not in homes built before this requirement took effect in 2012. There is now discussion about whether existing homes should be fitted with sprinklers, as has been done in the United States and is being done in Finland, where the authorities estimate 50% of care homes now have sprinklers.
