On 29th August a fire was reported at 22:15 in the Battenbroek care home in Walem, near Mechelen north of Brussels. All 62 residents had to be evacuated. 14 people were taken to hospital, including four firemen. Two of the residents were in a serious condition. A number of rooms were seriously damaged. The fire is believed to have started accidentally. Four years ago nine people were killed by a fire in a care home in Belgium. The authorities are reviewing the fire safety regulations for care homes, which at present do not include a requirement for sprinklers.
